activity guide

objective:

encourage participants to work together and share resources to achieve a common goal, while practicing communication and problem-solving in a team setting.

instructions:

  1. set the scene
    1. introduce the challenge: “you’ll work as a team to build a bridge using limited materials. the goal is for the bridge to hold a small object—like a pen or eraser—and allow a sheet of paper to pass underneath it.”
    2. distribute kits of simple materials to each team of 3–4 (e.g., straws, string, tape, paper clips).
  2. creation phase
    1. explain the constraints clearly
    2. no additional materials may be used
    3. the structure must be freestanding and span a gap (decide table width or distance)
    4. participants begin building their bridge within the time limit
  3. testing the bridges
    1. each team presents their bridge
    2. facilitator or a team member places a small object on top to test strength
    3. optionally check if a blank sheet of paper can slide underneath
  4. group reflection
    1. prompt questions:
    2. “what was the most challenging part of building together?”
    3. “how did you communicate and make decisions as a team?”
    4. “what strategies worked well under pressure?”
    5. celebrate creative or unexpected solutions
