objective:
encourage participants to work together and share resources to achieve a common goal, while practicing communication and problem-solving in a team setting.
instructions:
- set the scene
- introduce the challenge: “you’ll work as a team to build a bridge using limited materials. the goal is for the bridge to hold a small object—like a pen or eraser—and allow a sheet of paper to pass underneath it.”
- distribute kits of simple materials to each team of 3–4 (e.g., straws, string, tape, paper clips).
- creation phase
- explain the constraints clearly
- no additional materials may be used
- the structure must be freestanding and span a gap (decide table width or distance)
- participants begin building their bridge within the time limit
- testing the bridges
- each team presents their bridge
- facilitator or a team member places a small object on top to test strength
- optionally check if a blank sheet of paper can slide underneath
- group reflection
- prompt questions:
- “what was the most challenging part of building together?”
- “how did you communicate and make decisions as a team?”
- “what strategies worked well under pressure?”
- celebrate creative or unexpected solutions
